Product comparison
A lattice roof provides fixed, filtered shade. A louvered roof changes position so the user can adjust light, airflow and overhead coverage. The better choice depends on how the space needs to work.

The roof changes how a pergola or patio cover feels and functions. Fixed lattice leaves regular openings between the slats. Motorized louvers rotate, giving the user more control as the sun and weather change.
4KLA distributes 4K Aluminum systems for contractor-led residential and commercial projects in Southern California. This comparison focuses on the practical difference between the two roof options.
The short answer
Choose lattice when the project needs consistent filtered shade, airflow and a simple fixed roof. Choose a louvered roof when the user wants to adjust the roof angle for more sun, more shade, ventilation or rain coverage.
Both systems still need to be planned around the span, support layout, building connection, drainage and site exposure.
Lattice and louvered roofs compared
| Project factor | Lattice roof | Louvered roof |
|---|---|---|
| Roof position | Fixed open slats | Louvers rotate together |
| Shade | Consistent, patterned shade | Adjustable from open light to fuller shade |
| Airflow | Always open between the lattice | Changes with the louver angle |
| Rain | Openings allow water through | Closed louvers shed water into the system’s drainage path |
| Operation | No moving roof components | Motorized operation and controls |
| Planning focus | Slat size, spacing, direction and fixed shade pattern | Controls, power, drainage, access and moving components |
Choose lattice for fixed, filtered shade
A 4K Aluminum lattice roof uses fixed slats with open space between them. The slat size, spacing and direction determine how much shade reaches the area and how the pattern moves during the day.
Lattice works well when the project should remain open to light and air. It has no motorized roof mechanism to operate, and it can be developed as an attached, freestanding or project-specific pergola layout.
Because the roof stays open, lattice should not be presented as rain coverage. Furniture, equipment and finishes below it need to suit an open outdoor area.
Choose louvers when the roof needs to adjust
A 4K Aluminum louvered roof uses slats that rotate together. The user can open them for light and cross-flow ventilation, change the angle for shade, or close them for fuller overhead coverage.
Closed louvers direct rainwater toward the roof’s gutter and downspout system. Drainage still needs to be planned for the specific layout so water leaves the structure in the intended location.
The adjustable roof adds power, controls, moving parts and service access to the project. Those items should be coordinated before the materials are ordered.
What both systems have in common
Both roofs use 4K Aluminum components and can be coordinated with the posts, beams and overall pergola system. Available standard colors include Adobe Tan, Espresso, Black, Apollo Gray and Quartz White.
The structure still has to fit the site. Overall size, post locations, the building connection, surrounding doors and windows, utilities, furniture and circulation all affect the layout.
Information to send before choosing
Project review checklist
- Approximate width, projection and clear height
- Photos showing the entire proposed area
- Available plans or exterior elevations
- Preferred attached or freestanding layout
- Where posts can and cannot be placed
- Whether rain coverage is required
- Available power and the preferred control location for louvers
- Planned lighting or other accessories
With that information, 4KLA can help the contractor or project team compare the appropriate product options. Final engineering, connections and field conditions remain project-specific.
Common questions
Does a lattice patio cover keep rain out?
No. Lattice is an open roof with fixed spaces between the slats. It provides filtered shade, but rain can pass through the openings.
Can a louvered roof provide airflow?
Yes. Opening or angling the louvers allows light and air through. The amount depends on the selected angle and the surrounding site conditions.
Can lattice and louvered sections be used in one structure?
Some 4K Aluminum louvered structures can incorporate lattice sections. The layout and product compatibility should be confirmed for the specific project.
